When should our talents will be appreciated ?

“The art, film and acting industry in Malaysia is still in third world class. Where the rich take advantage of the ignorence of the poor. It's not fair.”

The statement can be seen from two perspectives. Quo Status and Empirical Comparison.

STATUS QUO.

1. The current state of the artist in the performing arts becomes unfair when the pay is no longer measured by talent but by popularity and trending alone. No matter how talented the artist is, if the producer feels that she is not popular right now, there will be same fate as Jalil Hamid was offered RM1500 for the main character in 12 episodes. I'm saddened and disappointed, the total number of scenes to be recorded is 16. So, for an artist to make up 75% of the whole story's value is unjust. It's even more frustrating when a much younger, newer artist is offered more than him. It's happening in 2018!

2. In Malaysia, the issue of royalty in the field of music involving singers, composers, songwriters and publishers already has a solution. Millions of dollars have been raised for distribution. Rarely do we hear singers who live poor like veteran actors. The responsible body for local music industry is named RIM (Record Industry of Association Malaysia - www.rim.org.my) Actor and actress ? There is no specific body for their artistic royalty. Another example is the old and talented comedian Jalil Hamid. Dozens of his plays, hundreds of times in television broadcasts, what did he get? No royalties. If the station owners were able to raise millions of dollars a year, just by buying dramas and movies for the show, maybe the producers alone would earn a living. But the artists who was suppose to share the royalty, but they were not given the right.

3. For the film world, it's another math. The box office hit tens of millions of tickets sale. Ever heard of an actor being a millionaire? Ever heard of Dwayne Johson “The Rock” ? His royalty payment a year is over 300 Million USD. Why is there no royalty in Malaysia? The logic is simple, when we do not think of the other as equal, do not hold the concept of prospering everyone, do not respect the rights of others, then there will be the issue like Hantu Kak Limah complaining about their pays. Hundreds or thousands of repeating shows are not for them, but for the producers alone and cinema tycoons solely up there. The sweat collar of each actor to give you the best action, work 20 hours a day, top notch, is only enough to earn ten to twenty thousand RM, which we would rather sweep. This is the fate of Malaysian actors.

EMPIRICAL COMPARISON.

1. Korea is also an Asian country. Look no further, there are many artists in our country who are much more talented, good looking and beautiful as well. But what about their income ? In Korea there are already agencies that take care of their artists. The artist community is so strong that everything is taken care of. Call it KBS or TVN, their entire movie world is under control. This is a new business that has brought their talent and culture across the continent. It's not just about keeping the culture in the country alone.

2. In America, Hollywood has never been brimming with the popular, talented movies and artists. Is the director in western world are way talented than us ? Or they were all natural born great actors? Its all the same, but only their artwork is protected. Their hardwork is secured. They do all-out because of the long-term results. Their income is stable. So they can reproduce many good works. Their acting world is also strong because they are supported by a very honest society. SCREEN ACTORS GUILD where members of the organisation alone have reached one hundred and twenty thousand. The strength of this association is to protect the artwork of the American film industry. What is the role of this SAG? The 3 key points of the SAG struggle which we can learn :

  • Discuss and perform cast rights in terms of working hours, compensation and even the advantages of acting.
  • Collect compensation from any irresponsible copy right and distributions to the actor
  • Assist and develop the career of each actor in every aspect.

3. These three fundamentals are the birth of various billionaires and successful directors of western world such as Jerry Senfeild, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Christopher Nolan, Eddie Murphy, Al Pacino and Clint Eastwood's the old actor. Clint Eastwood? Yes, he's a millionaire. Legend. Not just the age and the rank of 'Datuk', but the royalties and current pay he earned is accordingly with his status for contributing to the Hollywood film industry. Do you know P Ramlee? Until the end of his life he lived without help. Children of P. Ramlee? Lost in trouble. Micheal Jackson's children? Enjoy the royalty of their late father's hard work. Life is guaranteed as long as humans have the ear to hear music. This is the fate of Malaysian arts activists. Who wants to fight for them? The majority of these talented people are our people, the Malays.

4. Each rebuke needs to come up with a solution. There are many things we can learn and many things we need to fix. SAG Malaysia needs to be set up. This is the first and foremost solution. It's not just the association that hunt for political funds. It is a strong and dedicated organization for the care of all performing artists. SAG is a transparent and manage by professional. SAG not only involves actors, it also requires all the players in the acting and film industry. If SAG had existed before, Dato Rosyam Nor would have been a millionaire and would not have had to jump into business. His work may be greater because his motivation is secure.

5. The second solution is a bit complex in execution. But it's still logical to run. If you are a doctor, the best is the expert. If the teacher, his high DG symbolizes how long he has been teaching. For the police, the nails on his shoulders are evidence of his height. For a performing artist? Veteran artists get their titles. Veterans are like the experts. For the artist, this veteran is the most experienced. Like our Prime Minister Tun M. Political strategist and country administration. Being able to cry without tears, being able to get angry without getting hurt, being able to laugh just to make the audience happy. But because of the "Veterans", in Malaysia, they do not get treat well. No commercial value. Since income is not available, then personal development is also limited. The looks is also less exciting. So artists also need a Grade System. Popularity and acceptance can also be an additional allowance. When the grade system among the performing artists is in place and consistent, then the income will all be secured, the young will appreciate the acting, and the veterans will be more appreciated in the acting. This association or organization should be led by business and accountable people. Not a politician, or an artist who has stopped acting. Leaders of the association must be professional and active. It should be business driven, not ‘home party meeting’. The main objective is the royalty income of the artists. Not a monthly gathering or a celebration for any ministers.

6. Finally, this article is intended to see further changes in all sectors of our country. Moreover, the industry is heavily involved with the Malays. It's very disappointing to see my fiance drama is already on iFlix, but the actors didn't even know their talent was playing in the paid broadcast. No royalties. The owner of iFlix receives monthly payments from millions of customers who enjoy the content of our cast.

That's not good for us, movie like Si Upin has already won in Russia. Believe me, if our artists were well taken care of, it would be possible for the list of the richest people in Malaysia to be listed by a performer in top 10 perhaps. As well as the integrity of the other industries will be changing towards justice and good. Malaysia will be respected in the eyes of the world.
